Youth organization Falanster opens a Creative Commons branch in Belarus.

The official opening of the branch will take place on August, 29 where all interested parties will gather, and there will also be an opportunity to learn more about this topic.The details of the event will be posted later.

The main goals of Falanster are to popularize public open and free licences, to reach the  increase in public domain and expand an ecosystem of free culture and knowledge.

The branch has already designated the direction of its ​​work for the coming year. Branch members will study different public licences in Belarusian legislation, analyze practices, creators’ needs in flexible tools of authorship, foreign experience, organize open discussions; they are also going to start the first experiment on crowdsourcing of updated copyright law through the internet. Recently “Free knowledge ecosystem” project appeared on the social startup platform talaka.by. There you can get involved in the collective work of the branch.

Origins or a drop wears away the stone

In 2011 and 2012 Falanster started to apply Creative Commons licences to the content and design of its sites (falanster.bypirates.bydrupal-sliot.bynagrady.by), gathered Drupal-rallies and created an educational club, focusing on working principles of opensource CMS Drupal, in spring-summer 2013 organized meetups to study copyrights.

Since 2013 Falanster has been holding periodic Wiki-days, where participants are offered to add articles and photos to the Wikipedia (belarusian, russian, english), has been making  presentations at conferences and telling what Creative Commons and free licences are, has been distributing educational materials, and has been broadening the ideas of free knowledge through the creation of pirate movement in Belarus.

Creative Commons branch network consists of more than one hundred branches in more than 70 countries worldwide. Branches are built on a voluntary basis and have a wide range of activities: creating of the local CC community, localization of information related to licenses, conducting research on the use of licenses, etc.
